Green
Street Arts Center has a wide array of opportunities for students in grades 1-12
to explore their creativity and build essential skills for success. Students may
focus on one area of the arts, or choose any combination of classes to engage in
a weeklong program from five artistic disciplines (Visual, Sound, Movement,
Media, Literary) offered at Green Street. The After School Arts and Science
Program offers classes in African Drumming, Breakdance, Songwriting, Visual
Arts, Hip Hop, Comic Book Creation, and much more for all grades. Students in
Grades 6-12 can take special classes in Videography, Sound Recording, and a Peer
Education Performance Project.
Students enjoy a nutritious snack upon
arrival and participate in small group activities until classes begin. Classes
for grades 1-8 are held from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM, and students may enroll in
Green Street Art Center’s unique Academic Enrichment program from 5:00 PM to
6:00 PM, Monday through Thursday.
The
Academic Enrichment hour offers students the opportunity to receive homework
help, work on additional academic exercises related to their arts classes, and
strengthen skills in preparation for standardized testing. Green Street is also
the site for Wesleyan’s participation in the Help Yourself Academy – a unique
program for at-risk students in grades 3 and 4 to explore science in twice
weekly experimentation sessions.
For students in grades
K-5, Green Street’s Friday Art and Science Program sessions are held at
Macdonough School from 3:30 to 5:00 PM. A special program for students in grades
6-12, offered from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm, connects local youth to the community
through a year-long interdisciplinary project which will result in a documentary
film, published work, and live screening with open forum.
In partnering with community resources to provide the best after school
enrichment program in arts and academics, Green Street is able to offer
individualized attention and rare learning opportunities for students of all
abilities and backgrounds. The teaching artists, supervisory staff, and
volunteer corps of Green Street Arts Center's After School Art and Science
Program come together to create spaces that keep each child safe and inspired as
he or she builds a relationship with the arts and utilizes the resources of the
program.
Transportation
Transportation from some elementary schools, Keigwin, Woodrow Wilson, and
Middletown High School is available by school bus. Other, limited transportation
services may be available from other schools in Middletown through Wesleyan
University.
Enrollment & Scholarships
Green Street’s program continues to focus on serving underserved children and
young adults, offering scholarships of up to 100% of tuition costs, payment
plans and sibling discounts to ensure all children the opportunity to
participate in the program regardless of economic background. Enrollment is
need-blind and on a first-come, first-served basis for the first 85% of daily
class space.
