Green Street Arts Center provides an afternoon haven where Middletown area
children and young adults can explore their creativity and develop practical
skills for everyday life. Each weekday afternoon, students in our
multidisciplinary After School Program receive a nutritional snack, homework
assistance, mentoring, and arts enrichment, all in the context of a safe
environment that keeps the children busy, engaged, and off the streets. The
After School Program is open to area students between the ages of 7 and 18,
offering them a safe place to go each weekday afternoon and giving them the
opportunity to enrich their lives through the arts and learn other transferable
skills. Students participate in arts activities (theatre games, free dance and
music jam), recreational arts (salsa, tap, music, art and science, comic book
illustration and videography), free arts classes (playwriting, electives, after
school clubs) and private vocal and instrumental lessons, as well as sound
recording classes. Each student is also cared for by specially trained Green
Street staff, teaching artists, community volunteers and Wesleyan students.
Equally vital to the program is the nutritional snack, time to socialize and
homework help that students receive each day. Over 45 Wesleyan student
volunteers not only help students with their homework, but many have also become
valued mentors for the students.
Green Street's After School Program provides the community with a unique
opportunity to keep each child safe and inspired as he or she builds a
relationship with the arts and utilizes the resources of the program. As
important, the program continues to focus on serving Middletown's deserving, yet
underserved children and young adults, offering scholarships to ensure all
children the opportunity to participate in the program regardless of economic
background.
