workshop or the jam, or do both! The workshop begins at 4:30pm and the jam
begins at 7pm. The cost for the workshop is $25; and the jam is $5.
About the Artists
Gina Ulysse is an assistant professor of Anthropology and African
American Studies at Wesleyan University, as well as a poet/performer and
multi-media artist. Born in Haiti, she immigrated to the U.S. and received
her PhD in Anthropology from the university in 1999. She has published
numerous books of poetry and her work has appeared in several
anthropological anthologies. She has performed at important venues in the
U.S. and Europe. She considers spoken word as an "alterdednative" form of
ethnography that captures the visceral often absent in structural accounts.
Nancy Wolfe has served as director of Center for Creative Youth (CCY)
at Wesleyan University since 1999. She is in her seventeenth year teaching
at Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts, with ten years as artistic director
of Theater Programs at Simsbury High School and several seasons as
artist/instructor at the International Film and Television workshops in
Rockport, Maine. A member of A.E.A., S.A.G., and A.F.T.R.A., Wolfe worked
for 20 years in "the business." Most recent credits include performances
for: O'Neill National Playwright's Conference and the Hartford Stage BRAND:
new series of staged readings. Wolfe has served on the Theater Review Panel
and the Master Teaching Artist Review Panel for the CT Commission on the
Arts and currently serves on the Education Advisory Board for Goodspeed
musicals.
Josh Hilberman has been a featured soloist and instructor at tap
festivals and has danced at jazz festivals. He spent three years with the
noted company, Manhattan Tap and in May 2001, celebrated his debut with
mentor Brenda Bufalino's American Tap Dance Orchestra. In May 2001, he was
selected as guest choreographer and soloist in the 10th anniversary
celebration of Tappers With Attitude. Hilberman has gained a reputation as
one of the leading choreographers of tap dance today. He has been a faculty
member of the Leon Collins Dance Studio, Roger Williams University and Mount
Holyoke College, and currently freelances throughout the United States and
Europe.
The Green Street Arts Center, which opened in January 2005, is an
initiative of Wesleyan University developed in collaboration with the City
of Middletown and the North End Action Team and serves as an anchor to the
revitalization efforts currently underway in the North End. Programming in
the former schoolhouse at 51 Green Street includes a vibrant after school
program and a wide range of affordable classes and workshops for children
and adults in music, dance, visual arts, theater, sound recording, media
arts and creative writing.
