Green Street Arts Center celebrates the one-year anniversary of its
In the Limelight Series with Sirius Coyote on Friday, November 17
at 8pm. The Connecticut-based quintet weaves together the sounds of the
various cultures of the Americas with those of the natural environments and
the dance rhythms of the Caribbean islands to create performance of
original, contemporary music played on traditional and modern musical

director Janis Astor del Valle commented,
"I can't think of a more exciting way to commemorate our
Limelight series than with Sirius Coyote. I'm ready to put on my dancing
shoes and I hope the rest of the community is too!"
Sirius
Coyote
performs on guitar, sax, clarinet, flutes, kalimbas, drums, keyboards,
banjo, ocarinas and a variety of other unusual instruments. They present a
family oriented concert that celebrates the preservation of traditional
cultures, ecological awareness and the creative spirit of community. Their
concert performance is a mix of Latin American songs and stories taken from
their popular repertoire of original and traditional music played on over 30
musical instruments from their wide collection. Songs include pre-Colombian
and modern pieces that focus on the environment, diversity and cultural
understanding. Audience participation is encouraged through sing-along,
clapping, dancing and music making. Most songs are in Spanish with English
introduction and translation.
The band members are:
Giovanni Ciarlo on guitar, lead vocals and percussion
Kathleen Sartor on percussion and vocals
Dennis Waring on clarinet, saxophone, flute and vocals
Dirk Westervelt and Ed Witkin on keyboard, banjo, concertina and bass

The Green
Street Arts Center,
which opened in January 2005, is an initiative of Wesleyan University
developed in collaboration with the City of Middletown and the North End
Action Team to provide an anchor for the revitalization efforts already
underway in the North End. Programming in the former schoolhouse at 51 Green
Street includes a vibrant after school program and a wide range of
affordable classes and workshops for children and adults in music, dance,
visual arts, theater, sound recording, media arts and creative writing.
