Singer-Songwriter Fernando
Ferrer Journeys to Green Street with Latin Sounds and Universal Themes
--
Middletown Arts
Center presents a special concert by acclaimed Puerto Rican musician.
Middletown, Conn. March 6,
2007-The Green Street Arts Center presents a new breed of Puerto Rican
singer-songwriter with a special performance by Fernando Ferrer, who
combines themes of social justice with his percussive guitar technique and
superior vocal abilities. Drawing on the Nueva Tova (new song) legends of
the 70's and modern day troubadours, Ferrero's style invites comparisons
to Silvio Rodriguez and Victor Jara as well as Tracy Chapman and Ani
DiFranco. The performance takes place on Wednesday, March 28 at 8pm at the
Green Street Arts Center. Suggested donation is $8 and $5 for Green Street
members and students. Green Street Arts Center is located at 51 Green
Street in Middletown. For more information or to make a reservation, call
860-685-7871 or visit www.greenstreetartscenter.org.
Fernando Antonio Ferrer Cruz, originally from San German, has been
a young pioneer among the new breed of singer-songwriters in Puerto Rico.
He first appeared on stage in Lares '97 and has since made himself known
throughout the Island, the Caribbean, the U.S. and Mexico. In January 2002
he released his self-produced debut album "Después de Tanto Tiempo" which
was recorded in Santo Domingo. The album is an amalgamation of his love
for jazz, his passion for international folk music and his experience as a
drummer. It has a soothing sound that is undeniably Latin but
simultaneously overcomes geographical boundaries and can be appreciated in
a wider context. Ferrer has recently been featured in numerous festivals
and recordings in the Caribbean, the U.S. and Mexico
The Green Street Arts
Center, which opened in January 2005, is an initiative of Wesleyan
University developed in collaboration with the City of Middletown and the
North End Action Team to provide an anchor for the revitalization efforts
already underway in the North End. Programming in the former schoolhouse
at 51 Green Street includes a vibrant after school program and a wide
range of affordable classes and workshops for children and adults in
music, dance, visual arts, theater, sound recording, media arts and
creative writing.
Participation at Green Street is open to everyone; tuition assistance is
available. To receive more information about the Green Street Arts Center,
